Brian Hawkins

Bachelor of Environmental Science with 1st Class Honours and University Medal (University of New South Wales)

Brian has been studying plants and animals, both formally and informally, for 15 years: his specialties are birds, frogs and nocturnal surveying. In 2004 Brian was awarded first class honours and the University Medal in Environmental Science (Biology) by the University of New South Wales for his thesis on "The Distribution and Calling Behaviour of the Yellow-bellied Glider Petaurus australis in the Gosford Area." He has worked for the NSW National Parks Association and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and is a member of the Ecological Consultants Association of NSW, the Frog and Tadpole Study Group, the Ecological Society of Australia, the NSW Bird Atlassers and the Australian Plant Society. As an ecological consultant, Brian has worked on projects in the Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, Clarence Valley, Greater Taree and Tweed Local Government Areas. Recent notable wildlife observations include: the first records of Black Flying-fox and Green-thighed Frog for Dorrigo National Park; the first records of Sooty Owl, Superb Fruit-dove and Barred Cuckoo-shrike for Bellinger River National Park; the first records of Stuttering Frog and Glandular Frog for Cathedral Rock National Park; and the first records of Green-thighed Frog, Yellow-bellied Sheathtail-bat, and Purple-crowned Fruit-dove for the Bellingen Local Government Area.

Sally Mathews

Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Physical Georgraphy (University of New South Wales)

Sally has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Physical Geography from the University of NSW. Her honours thesis sought to answer the question, “What determines range-size in Australian Eucalypts?”, and her findings have been published in the Australian Journal of Botany (Volume 53, Number 6, pp 501-8). Sally has a lifelong interest in plants and has spent the past seven years working in plant-related fields such as horticulture, bush regeneration, seed collection and vegetation management. She has been extensively involved in community-based environmental restoration projects, and has a sound understanding of the human side of natural resource issues. She is a member of the Australian Plant Society. As an ecological consultant, Sally has worked on projects in the Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Clarence Valley, Nambucca and Tweed Local Government Areas.
