Law firms are complex. So are legal careers.
Yet, most lawyers are expected to just figure it out.
Partnership. Leadership. Managing teams.
Business development. Career transitions.
I’ve seen law firms and legal careers from multiple perspectives.
As a lawyer, law firm partner, C-suite executive, and CEO, I’ve lived inside the day-to-day realities of law firms and legal careers. I work as an advisor and coach to lawyers facing the challenges that arise throughout their careers.
The conversations I have every day involve:
Stepping Into Partnership
Transitioning from senior lawyer to partner and leader.
Leading People and Teams
Leading teams, managing performance, and developing others.
Delegation and Team Performance
Creating leverage, accelerating the growth
of team members, and driving accountability.
Building a Practice
Building visibility, expanding and deepening relationships, and creating business opportunities.
Managing Career Transitions
New roles, changing priorities, moving firms, and career inflection points.
Firm and Practice Leadership
Balancing strategy, execution, relationships, and performance as responsibilities grow and leadership challenges become more complex.
About Me
I’m Nicholas Jelfs-Jelf.
I've spent most of my career in and around law firms. In the US, UK and Hong Kong.
My experiences have given me a front-row seat to the realities of legal careers and the challenges that law firms face. And those experiences have led me to where I am now. I work with lawyers to help them build successful practices, step into leadership roles, navigate career transitions, and confront the demands that come with increased responsibility. As a result, my clients include partners, senior associates, practice leaders, executives, and leadership teams.
I started out as a corporate lawyer before becoming a partner. Over time, my career expanded beyond legal practice into leadership roles spanning talent, operations, strategy, and executive management. I've served in C-suite positions at global law firms and as CEO of a leadership development and coaching boutique focused on professional services. I hold coaching credentials through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and have trained with the NeuroLeadership Institute and Brown University (in partnership with ACT). I am also certified in assessment tools such as Korn Ferry 360, and EQ-i.
My approach is practical and conversational. Coaching should help people think more clearly, make better decisions, and take meaningful action. With that goal, I aim to ensure that every conversation is grounded in the realities of the work and everyday practice, not abstract theory.
If you're ready to explore how I can help you, please reach out.
Coaching is a conversation, not a transaction
The right fit matters. If you’re considering coaching or advisory services, let’s start with a discussion about what’s happening, what’s important. and what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll talk through ideas and whether working together makes sense.
